A gravel cycling training plan must prepare more than one power number. Loose surfaces raise the cost of producing speed, short rises interrupt steady pacing and technical sections demand attention when you are already tired. The plan should combine endurance, repeatable changes of pace, handling and self-sufficiency without making every ride chaotic.

Build durability before adding chaos
The foundation remains repeatable aerobic work. Once that is stable, add tempo on rolling terrain, controlled over-unders and short hard efforts that reflect the course. Do not reproduce every surge from a race file in training. Select the few demands most likely to decide your day.
Practise handling while fresh, then while moderately tired
- Look through corners and choose a line before braking heavily.
- Keep pressure smooth on loose climbs instead of producing one large torque spike.
- Practise eating and drinking on safe, simple sections.
- Learn which tyre pressure and equipment work for your surfaces.
- Use technical practice to improve control, not to manufacture unnecessary risk.
Use a GPX route as context
Distance alone misses climbing density, high-altitude exposure, repeated corners and the location of technical sectors. A route profile can guide workout emphasis and long-ride terrain. It cannot predict weather, surface condition or race tactics, so keep contingency in the plan.
Fueling and equipment belong in training
- Test the same bottles, bags and food placement you will use on race day.
- Practise eating before technical sectors rather than waiting until both hands are busy.
- Carry tools you can actually use and rehearse common repairs.
- Check whether rough terrain changes what your stomach tolerates.
- Plan refills from the real course instead of an ideal schedule.

A few rehearsals should combine the expected surface, duration, pacing and nutrition. Most weeks should isolate only part of that cost so you can recover and improve. Full simulations are expensive; use them when the information gained justifies the fatigue.
