Build a gran fondo training plan around endurance, climbing, durable tempo, fueling practice, recovery and a controlled taper for 100 km or longer events.
A gran fondo training plan is not simply a collection of longer rides. The event asks you to produce useful power after hours of accumulated work, pace climbs without spending the day in the red and keep eating and drinking while fatigue grows. Preparation should make those decisions familiar before race day.
Translate the event into demands

Build the long ride progressively
Start from the longest ride you have completed recently and recovered from normally. Add time in small steps, hold the duration when fatigue lingers and schedule easier weeks. You do not always need to ride the full 100 km in training; you do need enough time on the bike to validate pacing, comfort and nutrition.
Train useful power late in the ride
Gran fondo performance depends on durability: what remains after prior work. Early in the plan, keep the long ride mostly easy. Later, add controlled tempo on climbs or several sub-threshold blocks after some endurance time. The goal is stable execution under manageable fatigue, not turning every weekend into a race simulation.
Practise fueling as a skill
- Begin eating before hunger becomes the signal.
- Test foods, drinks and concentrations during training—not at the event.
- Match the plan to expected duration, intensity, heat and refill access.
- Increase intake gradually when your target is higher than your current tolerance.
- Record what you consumed and how your stomach, energy and pacing responded.

Use the course profile without copying every kilometre
A GPX file can reveal distance, climbing density, long ascents and technical sections. Use those features to choose terrain and workout emphasis. The course does not justify unsafe descents or impossible weekly volume; it informs specificity inside the load you can absorb.
Taper from the work you actually completed
Reduce volume before the event while retaining a small amount of familiar intensity. A rider carrying heavy fatigue may need a larger reduction than one whose preparation was interrupted. Do not repay missed long rides during the final week.

How long should my longest ride be before a 100 km gran fondo?
There is no universal percentage. It should be long enough to test pacing, comfort and fueling, but still fit your training history and recovery. Many riders can prepare without completing the entire distance beforehand.
How many hard sessions do I need each week?
Many recreational riders progress with one or two demanding days including races or hard group rides. The long ride may become one of those days when it includes substantial climbing or tempo.
Should every weekend ride include race pace?
