A power meter can sharpen your pacing, but it is not a requirement for structured training. Plan by duration, control intensity by feel, and give each day a clear purpose. Knowing when to ride hard and when to back off matters more than collecting another number.
Start with the time you have
Use the days and hours you can train consistently. That budget decides how long rides can be and where intervals, endurance, and recovery fit. A four-hour week you complete is more valuable than an eight-hour schedule you regularly miss.

Easy riding should allow full sentences. Threshold work feels hard but controlled. VO2max efforts are very hard and brief. Record an RPE after each session. Over time, those notes teach you how your own legs respond better than a generic chart can.

RPE is specific to duration. Ten seconds at RPE 9 and ten minutes at RPE 9 produce different outputs and training costs. The workout description must include both intensity and time.

- A consistent climb can replace a trainer interval; turn around or continue easily during recovery.
- Short hills can provide cadence, strength-endurance, or VO₂ work depending on gearing and duration.
- Technical routes are poor choices for precise intervals but valuable for event-specific handling.
- Strong group rides count as hard sessions even when nobody labels the surges as intervals.
A five-hour week without sensors
- Tuesday — 60 min: endurance, RPE 3, with six relaxed high-cadence efforts.
- Thursday — 75 min: 3 × 8 min hard-controlled climbing at RPE 7–8; 5 min easy between.
- Saturday — 2 h 15 min: conversational endurance, practice fueling every 25–35 minutes.
- Sunday — 30 min: recovery at RPE 1–2, or rest if the legs remain heavy.
Progress by adding time to the long ride or useful minutes to the interval set—not by making every session feel harder. After two or three loading weeks, reduce volume if normal recovery signals are deteriorating.
Keep a low-tech training log
For each ride, record duration, session type, session RPE, one sentence about execution, and any relevant context such as heat, poor sleep, illness, or unusual soreness. Over time, this creates a personal map: which weeks you absorb, which interval formats suit you, and when an apparently easy plan becomes costly.
