Work backward from the event
Start with the goal event and describe what success requires. A long gravel event demands durable sub-threshold power, fueling practice, handling under fatigue, and comfort over the expected duration. A short criterium places more weight on repeated surges, positioning, and sprint capacity. The final specific block should rehearse those demands; earlier phases should build the capacities needed to tolerate that work.
A worked 16-week example
A rider with six hours per week preparing for a 100 km gran fondo might use five weeks of base work, one recovery week, four build weeks, one recovery week, three event-specific weeks, and a two-week taper. That is not a prescription. If the rider already has strong endurance but limited climbing power, the balance should change. If illness removes ten days, the plan should re-establish consistency rather than compress every lost workout.
Use checkpoints instead of blindly following dates
- Consistency: are you completing most planned sessions without routinely rearranging the week?
- Workout quality: can you complete key efforts with stable pacing and appropriate RPE?
- Recovery: are sleep, motivation, soreness, and easy-ride feel returning to normal between hard days?
- Durability: can you hold intended endurance output late in the long ride without excessive drift or loss of technique?
- Specificity: does recent training increasingly resemble the duration, terrain, intensity changes, and fueling demands of the event?
If several checkpoints deteriorate together, extending the current phase or reducing load is often more productive than advancing because the calendar says so. A phase is successful when it creates the intended adaptation and leaves you able to train next week.
